Greetings, Steve, and welcome.

My company offers several fund choices within our 401K. After reading the various TMF publications I am interested in convincing the company to offer a Index Fund option. The first response back is that as a relatively small company (2000 empl.) the bug guys (Fidelity, Vanguard etc.) are not interested in our plan.

Is this true?

It's partially true, but it really depends on your company's choice of 401k provider/administrator. Many, many tiny 401k plans still manage to include one of the big boys' index funds. There's not much you can do except to gripe long and loudly to your employer. And the more co-workers you can get to do the same, the more likely your employer will be to do something to accommodate your desires.
