Sure - crayons will work! Crayons are how many people color their candles - they get melted and stirred into the wax. I would suggest you cool the wax to just pourable, quickly stir in the crayon pieces and then pour the wax into the mold. Vary the crayon piece sizes for different effects.

Glass pieces that have been tumbled to smooth the edges might work for color and safety. The problem with glass, whether pieces or marbles is that when they get hot they fracture - and might shatter. I am not sure about the mosaic tiles.
