The JoAnn's Fabric store near me is having a pattern sale this weekend. Perhaps other fabric stores are also having sales? You could pick up something easy there: perhaps onesies/sacques?
Hooded bath towels are really easy - one square piece of terry and one small triangular piece of terry - sew triangle to corner and edge all around with a ribbon or zig-zag stitching.
Also saw a really cute idea last winter - a baby-carrier cover...blanket type material with elastic around the edges to hold it on the carrier, and a ribbon edged circle cutout for the baby to look out through...great for cold winters when blankets get kicked off!
Finally, going on with the blanket idea, Carol Duvall/HGTV's web site had a really cute "quillow" - a quilted spread that folded into a pillow. Adjusted for size it would be really cute for a baby.

Hope these help
