Greetings!
Two ways I've read about are to stitch the aida to another cloth and wrap that around the dowel...or just use another cloth to thicken the Aida fabric layer so that the Q-snaps have more to grip. No actual experience - I usually stitch out of hand.
As far as stitching groups - I usually read rec.crafts.textiles.needlework.
