To anyone who has spent time on the Mechanical Investing board, the name gritton says it all.

For those who may not be aware, Mechanical Investing is about developing and using clearly defined quantitative strategies and backtesting them to validate the ideas.

Jamie Gritton rocked the world of MI two years ago when he introduced his backtesting tool. He runs it on his own web site, for no profit and no motive other than the benefit of the MI community. Take a look here:
http://backtest.org/
It began as a fairly humble tool allowing everyone to analyze for themselves the performance of the existing MI screens, many of which were originally developed by TMF's Robert Sheard. Jamie continued over the last two years to respond to dozens of ideas, adding features to his backtester and making it the incredible tool that it is today.

The next leap forward was introduced by Jamie with this most innocent looking message -

The Screen Builder allows any of us to test our own screening ideas, not just to validate existing ideas. Who could ask for anything more?!

Jamie is not only a man of numbers. He knows his way with words too, and he leads by example. For over two years he has managed his personal portfolio, following the ideas of MI, in plain view. He calls it the Cherry Tree. He has provided us with a weekly insight into his ideas, actions, successes and failures. Here is the latest Cherry Tree message -

When a raging controversy developed on the MI board regarding the effectiveness of covered calls as a hedging strategy, Jamie did the only sensible thing. He ran a 20 week live demo of a covered call strategy. Here is the final installment in that series -

Mechanical Investing is about serious research. Jamie Gritton is the consumate researcher. Close to 1000 readers of the MI board: http://boards.fool.com/Message.asp?mid=15565000 depend on Jamie's work for their investing decisions. I nominate him for the first Feste Award.
