> Maybe that is true of some UPS units, but I have never seen it.

The point was overlooked. Many a UPS will even output power that dirty. And can be marketed as a sine wave output. 'Dirty' AC power is good power for electronics. The point: because a power supply is and must be that robust. That same power, that can be problematic for strip protectors and motorized appliances, is good power for electronics.

Does not matter what one UPS does. What matters is why pure sine waves typically do nothing for hardware protection.

Need for pure sine waves is a popular myth. Purpose of a UPS is temporary and 'dirty' power so that unsaved data can be saved (and to avert reboots). It does nothing to protect hardware nor saved data. But the myth is widely believed and easily promoted. Just like that UPS (200 volt square waves with a 270 volt spike). It was promoted subjectively as a sine wave output. The claim was subjective. So a lie is legal.

That lie and a mythical need for pure power is the point.

Many anomalies can exist. Frequency variation, reverse polarity, EMC/EMI, open neutral, sags, harmonics, RFI, outage, floating ground, spikes, leakage currents, bad power factor, flicker, ground loops, or high voltage to name but a few. Nothing solves all anomalies. Which one is a concern? UPS addresses one anomaly. Other solutions address others. A recommendation defines an anomaly BEFORE recommending a solution. Unfortunately too many promote a UPS to solve all anomalies. It doesn't.
