While I won't disagree with the generalization that cable companies are cheap and don't care about temporary inconveniences, I do dispute the apparent corollory - that phone companies are customer friendly people who have lots of space capacity. Ask anyone who has ever tried to get a service other than residential voice (e.g. ISDN, a T1 or frame relay service) what they think of RBOC customer service and speed of installation. <

Couldn't agree more.

Also, having helped design several telco frame relay networks, I have seen oversubscription assumptions ranging from a 'conservative' 4:1 (subscribers to available bandwidth) to 10:1. I haven't worked on a DSL design, but I am positive that oversubscription of both bandwidth and switch ports is essential to the telco financial payback model.
