>> Back in the days when I knew even less than I know now about investing, a guy I know said I should buy some HPT because they were good, so I did. <<

I bought HPT back around 1999 when REITs were depressed and hotel REITs in particular were out of favor. I think I paid around 18. The financials seemed pretty strong for something issuing what was about a 14% dividend at the time.

Milked that for a couple of years and sold it at around 30 once REITs started picking up after the dotcom meltdown. Should have kept it for a couple more years!
