>>>Is it really safe to use them without some kind of venting to the outdoors?<<<

No. Absolutely, positively, no.

The heater combines carbon from the fuel and oxygen from the air to produce heat, carbon dioxide (CO2), and carbon monoxide(CO), a colorless, odorless, poisonous gas. As the oxygen in the camper begins to get used up, more CO and less CO2 is produced. Eventually the heater begins to go out from lack of oxygen but don't worry about that because all the people plus the dog have been dead awhile.

The symptoms of CO poisoning include drowsiness, so don't plan on turning it off when you start feeling sick. Leaving a window or vent open to some outside air may or may not be enough. The problem is that if people are fine with the window open all the way, there is the temptation to close it
part way because the person closest to it feels the draft.
