A Noblesville girl was killed late Sunday after a man shot her with a handgun he thought would be empty, court documents say.

Jacob Travis McDaniel, 20, Noblesville, was charged Monday afternoon with reckless homicide in the death of 16-year-old Aubrey Peters.

Aubrey Peters, 16 — who was once hailed a hero for helping save two children from drowning in an icy reservoir — died after she was shot in the chest late Sunday. It was not immediately clear why she was killed, but police reportedly arrested Jacob McDaniel, 20, who was one of four people inside the Noblesville home when Peters was fatally shot.
