Have others had such waves of grief, in public?

Sure. Especially at work. Fortunately my boss and coworkers all knew my DH and were completely sympathetic.

For a couple of years I also burst into tears whenever I saw an ambulance in motion with sirens. Fortunately, since I live a few blocks from a fire station with ambulances, I have gotten past the violent reaction. I still feel a wave of grief and sadness, however, when I see the ambulances, and think, "Another person's life turned to shit."

(Ambulance to hospital. Ambulance from hospital to airport. Medivac jet to Seattle (2 1/2 hours). Ambulance from airport to hospital. A week later, two ambulance hospital transfers. -- Still gives me nightmares, 11 years later.)
