HDHP and HSA are not always a bad deal. We have the option of either an HDHP with an HSA, or a traditional plan. For a family, the premiums of the HDHP plus the maximum out-of-pocket expense for in-network care are slightly less than the premiums for the traditional plan, which requires you to use in-network care. So even in the worst case scenario the HDHP is better. Plus we have the option of going out-of-network if we want to and are willing to pay more. Since we are healthy and our costs are much less than the maximum out-of-pocket, the HDHP comes out way ahead. I would guess that very few plans compare this way.
