He clearly didn't lift it off a drinking glass.

He also seemed to lift it off of an area of the screen that had only been touched once (or once since the screen was cleaned), meaning it wasn't used much.

So, even if a thief tried to lift a print off the phone itself, it seems like it wouldn't be that simple (given all the swiping people do on their phones, I suspect any prints would be unusable).
