He should have let the kids go down on whatever charges they could find, and have enough sense to let the law handle it.

The liberal purist in me agrees. The angry, budding conservative celebrates what he did. Part of leadership is keeping the respect of the troops. Like it or not, beat cops have their own sense of justice, and it doesn't always parallel the law. In extreme distortion, it's evidenced by that broom stick in New York. Most of the time, it's much less destructive. But it's always there.

No matter how it shakes out, it's going to be darn interesting to see how the civilians, politicians, and emergency services people posture themselves around this. If there's one generality you can make about Erie politics, it's boring as can be usually.
