Are there such a thing as electric fire place inserts that heat house like gas fire place inserts?

Not sure. Probably there is but why would your want one? If you do not have natural gas, getting a propane tank may be a good thing anyhow. (Then you can think about a gas dryer and water heater, not to mention the fact that cooking with gas is definately where its at.) Heating with propane is more cost efficient than heating with electricity. A large electric heater like that will require a dedicated circuit and a large wire size to run it. It may not be much more to run the gas line.

There are, but they tend to look rather cheesy.
My suggestion --- visit a fireplace shop and make inquiries.

The electric models definitly look cheap and from the shopping ive done are about 30%-40% more expensive tom operate than a similiar size gas model.
