Here's an acoustic experience you can achieve at home, for those unfortunate enough not to have the winter woods in their backyard.

Take a plastic supermarket bag (you know you've got one somewhere), stretch it out into a string and tie knots every 1.5 inches. So it's like a tightly stretched knotted string.

Hang the handle end from a location outside of your house, and light the bottom. It will flare at the bottom and then slow down at the knots. At this stage it will start to drop little flaming globules of molten plastic to the ground which emit a strange sound in doing so.

You and your friends can then argue for hours about whether the sound is "Dweeeeeb", or, "Zweeeeeb". There will be a perceptual difference to most human ears. Of course you have to be either very childish to try this, or drunk. But in both cases, I never fail to be amazed.
