thanks for the insights and suggestions. I'll just add one more:

throughout the year, but especially as the holidays approach, some items go on sale for deep discounts to bring shoppers in. This is a great time to get both basics and a few of those more upscale items. I've taken to grabbing a can or two of whatever sale item catches my fancy and starting a box in my own kitchen; when it fills up over the course of multiple shopping trips, I drop it off at the local food pantry.
