I remember the wooden box that had a crank and hung on the wall. All you had to do was crank the party's ring that you wanted to call. Only when you wanted to use the phone and picked up the receiver, someone else was already talking - seemed like for hours! That was the REAL party line where 3-4 of your neighbors were on the same line.

I remember my father teaching me how to use a phone before the dial phones were being used. When they came out he made sure we all knew how to use them properly. He worked for Bell of PA and was a stickler for how to use the phone with proper etiquette. That was a long time ago. - Ned
