Hi all,

I'm not sure, but we may be talking apples and oranges.

ACAD has been 3D for years now. The particular enhancement that ADSK is pushing in my line of work has the general acronym BIM for "Building Information Management". It is the latest development in my field and ADSK bought a company called Rivet (I believe) several years ago to drive this area of growth.

The Rivet building model is a totally complete 3D virtual model of an entire building which is very detailed and includes every column, beam, nuts and bolts, all piping, HVAC ducts and equipment. Of course it also includes every wall, door, window, water cooler, etc. I've seen the models and they are remarkably detailed. Not simply shaded boxes and geometric shapes.

GM is using it on all their new plants. These models incorporate not only the basic building proper, but also the manufacturing equipment. The thinking is that if they were to want to modify the plants equipment they do so using the virtual model first. It enables the identification of conflicts (pipes running through duct work, etc) before you have a crew of high paid union laborers standing around wondering what to do about it.

Other than a few large big pocket clients, I don't see this software adding to ADSK's bottom line any time soon. If Mr. Market thinks it will, then a very lucrative short potential exists.
