I agree with Matt's point about doing everything in writing, including adding a memo for your credit report. This is important.

FiV also has a valid point about the item not really having a major effect, however, I understand how you're feeling about this. I'd probably be feeling the same way.

What I'd do is to write to all parties, as well as send a letter of complaint, explaining everything, to the FTC and the Consumer Protection Agency. You can find their site at which should prove helpful.
