I'm considering buying a knitting machine also, and have been emailing the woman who owns a store in Oregon. She wrote a very good article about knitting machines:

You might want to look around her site and email her some questions. Also ask at your LYS and see if anyone in your area knows a machine dealer.

IIRC, the biggest problem with knitting machines is you can't buy one that would work with every weight of yarn. But if you typically only use chunky or worsted for example you might have good luck with it.

The lady at my LYS that I spoke with uses hers just for the backs and arms of sweaters so she doesn't have to do large panels of stockingette.
