is that $40 figure before or after the split?

$50 is split adjusted. Fred maintains that the Board of Directors and managment thought Apple was undervalued at $100 (pre-split), which is an interesting admission. He also claims that investors were clammoring for Apple to buy back even more shares at that price, but that the company showed remarkable restraint in limiting the repurchases.

In the raging bull market of the late 90s, the company needed for the stock to perform well to make the company appear strong. I can't fault them entirely for repurchasing shares back then. Not repurchasing any shares now, however, is a bad move in my opinion. Even repurchasing a few hundred thousand dollars worth, as a opposed to many millions, would be a good move.
