Rancor over "lame duck" judicial appointments may be new to us, but it is not exactly new to our country.

Jefferson, the Republican Democrat, and (John) Adams, the Federalist, collaborated in the Continental Congress on the founding of our country, but later diverged to become bitter enemies -- and the hostility endured until the end. They died on the same day -- Independence Day, no less -- and it's reported that Jefferson, not having received word that Adams had expired a few hours earlier, uttered "And Adams lives..." in surrender as he breathed his last.
