Media industries have had huge shrinkage in my lifetime and that shrinkage continues. Computers have decreased the number of people needed in the industry radically, more than in any other field that I know.

And musicians have been replaced by drum machines run amok as sound sample engines replace everyone but the composer and the sound engineer. E.G., the formidable adagietto passage from Mahler's 5th as "performed" by a young unknown engineer on computer.

Similarly, I have implemented thick complex light and sound cue controllers via computer in small mostly amateur playhouses in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, making it possible for me to do what only five years ago would have required 2-3 technicians working analog boards under the direction of a stage cue manager so that, e.g. lightning and thunder are realistically timed.
