Hopefully she has the money, and energy, to enjoy what time she has left now that she isn't tied-down as a caregiver.

I would never do that to 1poorlady, but she might just take it upon herself anyway. In her case I think it's at least partially cultural. But if I am of sound mind, I would insist on a change of living circumstances if I were infirmed as your FIL was; to take the burden off of her.
