how do the posters here close their iPhone apps?

In the normal course of things I don't. I trust Apple to manage memory and energy usage optimally. Second guessing the system defaults is always fraught.

I'm not sure which is best after reading a whole bunch on the subject...

Most of what you read on the topic will be clueless drivel. People don't know how the iOS internals work, and it changes over time. Optimizing battery life is critical to Apple, so whatever they are doing by default is usually right.

The exception is when apps misbehave. You can identify that to some extent by looking at resource usage and doing something about the outliers.
