How do you go about withdrawing from your IRA? It's not like a cash account where the interest earned is available in cash for the taking without injuring your principle investment. How do you live off the interest of your investments without seriously injuring them?

I'm not sure what the question is. Between the ages of 59 1/2 and 70 1/2 you can withdraw as much or as little from your IRA as you like. Thus, if you wanted to withdraw just the earnings each year during that period, you could.

Once you reach 70 1/2 you must start in effect withdrawing principal. The law is structured so that your IRA will be extinguished. The money can't sit there forever.
