Fidelity Investments provides a stock screening tool. An investor can input specific criteria for companies and their stock. The tool screens the universe of stocks -- thousands -- and matches the criteria.

Unlike many investors, I'm not that interested in stock price appreciation. I want stable (low beta) companies with high dividends, good Return on Equity, good EPS growth and low P/E ratios.

I ran a stock screen today. This is what it returned.

Many of these companies are financial services companies.

Question:
How does Federal Reserve policy affect financial services companies? If/ when the Fed reduces its Treasury and mortgage purchases, will financial services companies be hurt? If/ when the Fed begins to raise interest rates, will financial services companies be hurt?

Wendy, does your screen include include a step using free cash flow (per share)? If so, it is not a good idea to mix in financial companies because, rather than debt, they rely on deposits and other instruments for funding. As mungofitch once wrote,

https://boards.fool.com/i-know-you-dont-like-financials-has-...
...so many metrics of balance sheet and income statement are totally different for financials, so they can't be compared to other firms. Apples and oranges. Or, apples and spaceships.

For example, you might have zero long term debt but a gazillion dollars in short term debt. ROE is relatively meaningless, you want to look at return on total assets and leverage, etc.

It's often better to have a financials screen and a non-financials screen.
