How is America going to claim the moral high ground against such despots when it can't even trust its own kids to deal with the truth?

Well, this issue goes way beyond textbooks. For example, in the last few decades, the US has been dead scared of the socialist ideology. So many authors and Hollywood personnel were monitored. Even to this day, all US immigrants who care to become permanent residents or citizens have to certify if they believe in communism or not. So much for freedom of speech and expression when there is little freedom on thought.

As far as the issue with the textbooks is concerned, I fail to understand how this this purge is any different from removing the markers of slavery in southern states that still would like to cherish there heritage. There have been so many writings that have been inherently racist in nature and most of them are excluded from the modern day compulsory reading lists. If anything, this change helps making these books more accessible to the kids who would still learn about the misdeeds of their ancestors.
