How long can you expect brakes to last on modern vehicles?

That depends entirely on how you use them.

If you do a lot of stop and go driving on city streets, your brakes are going to wear faster.

If you do a lot of highway driving - going for an hour or two or three without ever touching the brakes - they're going to last longer.

On another forum I read which is dedicated to a single vehicle, there are stories of people going 100,000 miles or more between brake pad changes. Others get 20k or 40k miles. This is on vehicles that are more or less identical.

It's all about usage.
