However, I recently had hip surgery and looked over the statements showing what Medicare paid the surgeon, doctors, hospital, etc. vs how much United paid after Medicare. It looks to me as if United pays MUCH less than my premiums come to.

That's the eternal question about health insurance, isn't it? I've paid much more in homeowner's and auto insurance than I've ever collected. But when it comes to health insurance...I remember my mother and 2 years of cancer treatments and hospitalizations. United Healthcare was totally worth it. I have United Healthcare medigap, too, and I'm very happy with them.
