I actually found "The Sum of all Fears" to be a truly scary book. It seemed hugely plausible, and was extremely well done.

Clancy outdid himself, and he got most of the science right too. He says that he did part of it wrong deliberately to avoid providing a cookbook for building a Bomb; I suppose he's telling the truth, but to me the part he did wrong was glaringly obvious.

I saw the movie last weekend. It is only superficially like the book, but nonetheless was well done. In one spot, it yielded a bit to action-adventure formula fighting, but other than that it was quite well done and very engaging throughout.
