I also experimented with a "buy the dividend" strategy many years ago. I also found...through trial and error,,,that price movement post Ex-Dividend date is tied to market movement rather than dividends paid. So the longer I waited to sell on Ex-D, the greater roll market movement was to determining if 'buying the dividend' is worth it.

But what finally dissuaded me from this is that I gradually learned that this strategy is a lot of work for not much added income over straight buy-n-hold.
