I believe these are exactly the same funds, with exactly the same expenses. When you go to the Statement of Operations of the last annual shareholder's report, the reported income and expenses of 239,357 and 5,219,953, are exactly the same, which give an income expense ratio of 4.6%, which is one of the lowest IER's I've ever seen.

So which to own has a few other differences:

As others have said, if you need to buy/sell shares intraday then you'll need to use VTI, but if you can wait until the close of the day's NAV, the open end VTSAX may work better.

If you wish to hold the fund in a brokerage other than Vanguard's, there is usually a flat charge for owning Vanguard mutual funds, as Vanguard does not pay other brokerages to sell their MF shares. Not sure what it is now, but Fidelity used to charge a flat $75 to purchase shares of a Vanguard MF. But because VTI is exchange traded, there will only be the cost of a trade commission, which at Fido is $8.

But if you hold your account at Vanguard and you wish to own this fund, why pay a brokerage commission when you can purchase the MF shares at no trading commission.
