I can't believe someone would ask why a person would take a train instead of flying from SF to LA.

How about they want to see California? How about they hate to fly (have a fear of it even)? How about if they want to go part of the way as stated in the problem - stop at a place that is expensive to get to by plane?

I've noticed a lot of people think that HSR will work in CA just because they wish really hard. These people generally don't have any clue as to the market HSR is trying to enter.

75% of it is business, 95% of these people want quicker times, not slower, even one hour slower is significant. Time is generally more important than money in the high skill labor market of CA.

The other 25% are leisure, these people don't want to go through Bakersfield and Fresno to "see the sights". Its freaking Bakersfield, Stockton, and Fresno, there are no sights, the sights are on the coast. Also you can justs drive or take the bus if you want to see the sights, if you drive you can stop where you want and go see anything along the way.
