I currently have a target allocation of 9% for REITs in my IRAs (currently holding IYR but may switch to VNQ eventually). They've done really well since 2000, but this year so far, as with just about all asset classes that outperformed in 2003-2004, it's not good.

Still, it's important to stay the course and not get emotional. At least the rebalance I just finished allowed me to sell some at the top. That's part of why we rebalance once in a while.
