I didn't realize I was coming up so soon on 'ol man status. We bought 50/box at $50c from the Days Sundries and Such store (owned by my uncle*) back in the early 80's. Those prices (and the store) have long since gone the way of the dodo.

* He was a betting man. Frequently, he would bet us some esoteric provable principle to see if he could get us to bite. Since we came in with two quarters and an itch to buy ammo, this rarely worked.

One day the challenge offered was to determine the value of the coin that fell behind the counter only by the sound. We were entitled to keep the change if we indicated correctly. He dropped a quarter, then a dime, then a nickel and, finally, a penny.

I got the first two right and lost out on the last two. As a result, I walked away with a 21c box of ammo for the afternoon.

That day we shot targets for less than 0.5c/round! :D
