I don't think enough people appreciate how awesome indoor rowing is. You can take it to any competitive level you want.

Yes--rowers tend to be a bit of a different breed--I believe Concept 2 got the whole indoor rowing thing started as a way to help everyone keep training over the New England winters. Now there are international competitions with that, too! But the nice thing about learning in a boat is it is harder to overdo it or do it wrong and hurt your back--you'll flip the boat if you get aggressive without the right form.

Kayaking and rowing both involve boats and water. Similarity mostly ends there. And if you are not sure how good it is for you, google on "master's rowing" and then check out the images. Some pretty decent muscle definition on the 60- and 70-year-old men!
