I don't think he's a leech exactly.. he's very generous with his kids and his ex wife for that matter, and works very hard to support them all. There's something about college, that he just can't say no to his kids. He'll do anything to make it happen, including using his retirement money, taking money from his elderly father that doesn't have a lot, and asking his sister to co-sign on a loan as if it's no big deal. All those things really shock me. I think he's really just clueless, and somehow just not logical or rational.

The older kid was smart and did well in high school, and is very motivated for college. The younger kid went to a private out of state school across the country but it didn't stick. He didn't go back this past year. So no, the cost really wasn't justified for him, it wasn't the right thing to do. The $15k my dad gave was for the younger kid.
