The boards are getting a new home!

We're pleased to announce an update is coming to the community boards.

Sunday, September 25th: We are migrating the boards to a new platform. The site is currently in read-only mode and we will bring it back online as soon as the migration is complete.

I don't believe most people use it in that context.

Dictionary.com has the following definitions (I've emphasised the ones I hear most often):

1. to clear, as from an accusation, imputation, suspicion, or the like: to vindicate someone's honor.
2. to afford justification for; justify: Subsequent events vindicated his policy.
3. to uphold or justify by argument or evidence: to vindicate a claim.
4. to assert, maintain, or defend (a right, cause, etc.) against opposition.
5. to claim for oneself or another.
6. Roman and Civil Law. to regain possession, under claim of title of property through legal procedure, or to assert one's right to possession.
7. to get revenge for; avenge.
8. Obsolete. to deliver from; liberate.
9. Obsolete. to punish.

So for people who have only heard the word in the context of "justify," the relation to "avenge" is difficult to see.

No, no, no, I didn't mean to define the word as it is used now. I just meant to point out that it doesn't at all seem puzzling to me that both words derived from the same root.
