I don't mean to be rude here by any means, but this certainly exemplifies emotion ruling over logical thought.

"missing dynamic here is that we are a for-profit
company."

You said in a post yesterday that the Fool didn't need the money - that you had taken steps over the past 18 months to ensure its longevity. Don't fall over while you're backpeddling so fast!

These two comments don't follow - they aren't backpeddling at all. Even if they have taken a lot of steps to ensure longevity, you always have to look to the future (way into the future...) Being for-profit impacts how they operate - today and tomorrow. A past post in this board by one of the Gardner's said that this fee is only a small, small fraction of total revenue. There are many more reasons for doing this than just to bring in money (which will hopefully be visible as time progresses - that's the chance we take.)

Oh, that makes sense - open a starbucks in a poor neighborhood - charge the poor suckers there 3 bucks for a coffee - then give a little back to the poor neighborhood while skimming all the cream off the top - sounds like you're a politician now.

Have you ever done any volunteer work? There is always a selfish aspect to it - you give something away, but it also make you feel good for doing so. Businesses are no different. Fraternities do philanthropic projects all the time - with multiple benefits. A - it helps the community. B - it is good PR, which has benefits of its own. It doesn't mean that they are out to "get" people though...that is why they are totally separate foundations. Could you say the same applies for the Gates foundation and Microsoft donating money for health care? Sure it is good PR - but that isn't the real reason for doing it. Because it has benefits doesn't make them "bad" - they truly want to help.

I have been reading a LOT of these posts regarding the changes - and I don't think they are as bad as you make them out to be. There is always an uproar when change is announced - but there are many, many quality people staying because they care. Those caring people will make the community.
