I don't think the government is encouraging debt so much as coming up with a way to make sure it gets paid on time. In fact, they're pretty slick about it, when you consider that they won't be paying the transaction fee that credit cards charge most merchants. That's right up there with the IRS charging interest for tax due and not paying interest on tax refunds.

Look on the bright side...maybe when people are in the situation where they have to pay taxes on their credit card, they'll realize how deeply in debt they are and try to work toward changing it!
