I ended up buying a Toyota Matrix, basic model, 2006 used, 15,000 miles. About all I like is the mileage. I think I've figured out that what I want isn't available yet in my price range - a 30 mpg SUV under $20,000 out the door, that means including tax, license and registration. I'll get rid of the Matrix when something I want is offered.

Another major annoyance; an extra key for the car (beyond the 2 they gave me) costs $100 since it's got some chip in it to prevent car theft. What a racket!
