I enquired about withdrawing cash from my CREF account today. The answer was, my former employer doesn't allow that until I'm 55. I can annuitize at my current age (which I don't want to do), but cashing out is not an option, it appears.


I suggest contacting the school to see if they will consider changing that policy. Many TIAA-CREF plans were set up years ago, when employers generally exercised a greater degree of control over employees' retirement investing. Times have been changing. That policy may not have been examined for many years because the school isn't aware that anyone would like it changed. If you contact them, they may consider it.
