I guess I misrepresented myself. I am a writer by profession - grant writing -- but lately I have not been able to shake the feeling that I want/need to write fiction stories. I didn't mean expand my portfolio in the sense that I wanted to advance my career, I guess I just meant I want to write more.

I do travel a lot -- locally and internationally. I guess my renewed interest in writing comes now b/c I'm leaving my job to study in Africa for one year. I figure there will be no better fodder for stories than adventures abroad.

Going to jump in here with both feet: good writing is clear writing and having a technical writing background virtually assures it. And one of the reasons the books recommended in this thread exist is to make writing clearer through technique.

Some say that learning technique produces formulaic writing. I disagree. Writing requires a recipe just as any cooked up. Yeah, yeah, it's just another boy-meets-girl, boy-loses girl, boy-gets-girl and that's formula writing. So? It still works.

Good travel writing – in fact, any writing – meets a criteria expected by the reader. There's a technique to writing travel stories and if that technique isn't met then the story isn't bought.

Wanderer, seek out the techniques used in travel writing. Read as many as you can to find the formula and then repeat it. See Africa through your own eyes, for sure, yet write about what you see so the reader gets what the reader expects.
