I had a go-round last the end of last year with Amex. $3,000.00 in bogus charges, all online. My best guess is that a not-normal-for-me website I made a small purchase from has/had an employee who was pilfering charge card numbers.

Within a few days, LOTS of charges, all in December. Just in time for Christmas, I guess. If I remember correctly, I was the one who discovered the charges and contacted Amex; download financial transactions every few days and found them.

No run around with Amex, but a bit of a hassle to get new card/number, change whatever was set up with the old one, and some merchandise returns on the old card.

I feel badly for the merchants, and realize we all end up paying for the stuff some folks feel they're entitled to simply because they happen to inhabit planet Earth.

So I sympathize with you, but can understand the CC company's dilemma as well. It's either too much or not enough.
