I have a small dell laptop, and I use its own keyboard. The problem of the cursor jumping around has been constant. Maybe I'll plug in an external keyboard or a new computer one of these days.

Sounds like you also have a track pad and when you type your palm hits the track pad which causes the pointer move to where ever the cursor was on the screen.

At least that is what use to happen when I used laptops.

If true, you can always disable the pad and use an external mouse, or just be very careful not to touch the pad.
