I have had untold amounts of screwing around with PC's though. It seems that a PC can send out of its external VGA port a subset of what's on the screen, or exactly what's on the screen, or perhaps what's on the screen inside of a large black border.

Ahh, I think I see now. The couple of times I've used projectors I plugged into it with a regular monitor cable, which makes it identical to your desktop. I suppose the problem arises when people use S-video or RCA cables....I know from watching movies on a regular television that are played from a PC that you use the display settings to switch to a different screen type. That must be the problem.
