I have intimate experience with this via the Netflix Prize (remember that?)

You would be surprised by how little information is required to get almost all of the value out of a recommendation system. By the time you get to about ~50 ratings you are close to as accurate as you are gonna get for an individual. Rounding 1,2 to 1 and 3,4,5 to 5 did little to impact this. And Netflix is also completely correct that ratings and actual 'propensity to watch' are shockingly different.

Netflix knows what they are doing.
