I have no idea how cold it is at Zion in January (it was hot beyond belief in August), but if it is at all mild and you happen to have bikes with you, I highly highly highly highly recommend biking the road up Zion Canyon. The only traffic on the road is the buses (are the buses year-round utahtea?), so you'll live through the experience, and it's a great chance to see the views up close and personal. Or if biking uphill isn't your thing, put your bikes on the racks on the front of the bus, ride up the canyon in the bus (listening to the commentary), and ride back down. Much less effort; same scenery.
